Sub-Genre Conventions (plots/characters)
In a High School Drama the storyline is mainly based around a girl (however it there can be a male lead occasionally) and tends to show her make over from a timid outsider to an attractive popular at the end of the film. They also focus on the conflicts between different groups in school (the 'popular' and 'non-populars') and how two people from separate groups fall in love and have to hide relationship. Its based in a high school so therefore the characters are mainly all teenagers with a few teachers and parents. An example of this could be 'She's All That'. These films were very popular in the 80's.
YOUTH DRAMA
Unlike the High School Drama, Youth Drama is more serious and hard hitting. The storylines are mainly about social dilemmas involving the main character, which is usually a male lead. The characters are also mostly teen and can involve some police. Youth Dramas are more popular in the UK, and are mostly independent films. There is usually also a girl involved which is also having dilemmas, sometimes she can be pregnant at a young age or a victim of rape. They look into gang life so therefore its mainly based on the streets. An example of this would be 'Kidulthood'.

13. Sub-genre conventions (storyline)
High school drama:
Usually with a high school drama, it is based in a school/college.
The plot of the story is to basically show the common teenage life - an example: two teens, usually a boy and a girl, they meet, they fall in love. Or something like bestfriends falling out, fights which show who is the bully in the school and his troubles everyday to get through school life without getting kicked out.
High school drama doesn't always show just the teens, it also shows the teachers and parents. This helps to set the the time and location at times. An example of a high school drama is Mean Girls.
Youth Drama:
Youth drama are usually telling the life of a young person, outside of school. This means they would be filmed in the streets of most to known dangerous places.
The film may contain things from just teenagers on the streets to following gang crimes, which involve drug dealings or even killings. This may include more boys than girls as that is the common stereotype. If there are girls involve they too would be in for the wrong reasons. An example of a youth drama is My Murder.
