Sub-Genre Conventions (plots/characters)

HIGH SCHOOL DRAMA
In a High School Drama the storyline is mainly based around a girl (however it there can be a male lead occasionally) and tends to show her make over from a timid outsider to an attractive popular at the end of the film. They also focus on the conflicts between different groups in school (the 'popular' and 'non-populars') and how two people from separate groups fall in love and have to hide relationship. Its based in a high school so therefore the characters are mainly all teenagers with a few teachers and parents. An example of this could be 'She's All That'. These films were very popular in the 80's.

YOUTH DRAMA
Unlike the High School Drama, Youth Drama is more serious and hard hitting. The storylines are mainly about social dilemmas involving the main character, which is usually a male lead. The characters are also mostly teen and can involve some police. Youth Dramas are more popular in the UK, and are mostly independent films. There is usually also a girl involved which is also having dilemmas, sometimes she can be pregnant at a young age or a victim of rape. They look into gang life so therefore its mainly based on the streets. An example of this would be 'Kidulthood'.
