15. Analysis of Teen Drama (Mean Girls 2004)

15. Individual post

Analysis of 'A Cinderella Story (2004)'

9. Extension Activity

There are many individual or even groups of people who make title sequences.
One person in particular is Saul Bass, known for his attention-grabbing designs at the opening of movies.
Saul's designs has changed throughout the time he had been working as a graphic designer. One movie he has contributed to, by designing the title sequence was 'Anatomy of a Murder (1959)'.
Saul has previously worked with some of Hollywoods top-selling film makers. This had automatically put Bass at a higher position.
The design for Anatomy of a Murder is made up of uneven sized fonts that are all uppercase. This made the title sequence fun. Also, the background colours were plain but vibrant.

Clueless

Camera - An aerial shot of the car driving down the road, the camera doesn't follow but tilts in its way. Main character comes out of a store with bags in her hand and walks to the other side and is followed by the camera. Camera spins around three girls from their legs and skirts to then their faces and hands etc. Car pasts by camera really fast then birds eye view of the girls sitting in the car laughing. Zoom out from the girl and then follows her to the closet. Close up of the computer. High angle shot of the father running down the stairs. Camera follows the girl as she approaches her father. Two shot of the father and daughter. Shot reverse shot of the father and daughter talking. Car approaches camera, camera then changes to an aerial shot. Wide shot of the house.

Editing - At the beginning they have the indent on a blue background with bubbly font. Then the title of the film appears in the exact same way. Slow motion/ broken movements of the two main girls laughing and walking. Cross cutting appears constantly between different actions for example from the main girl shopping to her friends in a pool. Car drives away in fast speed.

Sound - Rock/Pop music of that time playing. Sound of the car driving. Voiceover of the main girl talking about her life. Song changes playing behind whilst she talks song links to the action she is doing which is looking for clothes to wear. Dialogue between father and daughter.

Mise en Scene - Designer clothes, a high school, a pool, people in swimwear etc. Girls in cars. Bedroom, Wardrobe, Computer that chooses her clothes suggests that she is rich. Kitchen is quite big again shows how rich they are. Maids and servants.

Subgenre conventions (Storyline)

High School Drama

In high school drama the plot is usually based in school or college etc. There's usually either two people that eventually fall in love at the end of the film or there's a fight in school or bullies There's usually problems in school between students and teachers. The main character is usually a female although overall they are all teenagers, teachers and maybe some main characters parents. There will usually be groups of people that hang out with each other in the film for example in Mean Girls there's 'The Plastics' and they go around showing the new girl the social groups that are in the canteen.

Youth Drama

In Youth Drama the plot is usually based in school, at home or on the streets. These films are usually independent films and are usually filmed on the streets so therefore they tell the story of gang life. The main character is usually a male and some of the characters will be gang members, the main characters friends and possibly police etc. There may be a female going through a hard time like bullying or she may be pregnant at a young age. The storyline is based on life as a teenager in the streets most of the time.
