Subgenre conventions (Storyline)

High School Drama

In high school drama the plot is usually based in school or college etc. There's usually either two people that eventually fall in love at the end of the film or there's a fight in school or bullies There's usually problems in school between students and teachers. The main character is usually a female although overall they are all teenagers, teachers and maybe some main characters parents. There will usually be groups of people that hang out with each other in the film for example in Mean Girls there's 'The Plastics' and they go around showing the new girl the social groups that are in the canteen.

Youth Drama

In Youth Drama the plot is usually based in school, at home or on the streets. These films are usually independent films and are usually filmed on the streets so therefore they tell the story of gang life. The main character is usually a male and some of the characters will be gang members, the main characters friends and possibly police etc. There may be a female going through a hard time like bullying or she may be pregnant at a young age. The storyline is based on life as a teenager in the streets most of the time.
